Agricultural Nonwoven Cost: Price per m² and Mulch Comparison

2026.09.09 HuaYue Fabric

In greenhouses, orchards, nurseries and open fields, a humble white or black fabric is being used more and more widely — agricultural nonwoven fabric. Its value does not come from looking premium, but from real physical functions: moisture retention, weed suppression, insulation, frost protection, breathability and biodegradability. For horticulture importers and growers, the hard part is rarely whether nonwoven works; it is that weed barrier, frost covers, nursery bags and crop blankets each serve a different purpose with different specs. This overview from Huayue walks through all four in practical terms.

Agricultural nonwoven is usually quoted by the kilogram, but what growers actually care about is the cost per square metre. The conversion is simple: price per m2 = price per kg / (1000 / GSM). A 100gsm weed barrier yields 10 m2 per kilogram, so always check whether a supplier quotes per kilogram or per square metre; the two are not directly comparable. The unit price moves with GSM, width, colour and order quantity, so send us your specification and we will cost it against the actual configuration. Lighter weights yield more square metres per kilo and look cheaper, but they wear out sooner, which is why the total cost matters more than the unit price.

What Drives the Price per Square Metre

First, GSM. At the same area, 80gsm and 100gsm differ by 25% in raw material, so the price differs too; weed barrier usually runs 70-120gsm, and orchards under long-term cover should go 90gsm or above. Second, UV stabiliser. Any fabric left in the open must be UV-stabilised or it embrittles within a season; that cost buys service life, it is not optional. Third, width and slitting. The closer the roll width matches your laying width, the less waste; slitting adds a processing charge. Fourth, order size. Standard white or black typically starts at 500-1000 kg, custom colours at 1-3 tonnes; mixing several specs into one container spreads the freight per kilo, and that usually saves more than haggling over GSM.

Lifespan Maths: The Real Cost Against Plastic Mulch

On unit price alone, nonwoven is more expensive than black film. Once service life is factored in, the conclusion flips. A 90-120gsm weed barrier lasts 3-5 years in the open, while plastic mulch typically survives one or two seasons. Over a three-year cycle you buy film two or three times, pay for removal labour and disposal each year, and leave fragments in the soil that interfere with the roots of the next crop. Nonwoven is a one-time purchase with no retrieval cost, and because it breathes it does not suffocate roots. For perennials such as orchards, vineyards and berries, run the three-year total. For annual vegetables covered for a single season, a light nonwoven or film may both work out cheaper, which is why we do not recommend nonwoven for every case.

Why Agriculture Needs Nonwoven

Traditional plastic mulch film is impermeable, must be retrieved after use, and its residue pollutes soil. Nonwoven, by contrast, is a web of fibres bonded directly — naturally porous, letting water, air and nutrients through while blocking light to suppress weeds and slowing soil moisture loss. Just as important: PP spunbond is inherently durable, but agricultural nonwoven can be made biodegradable (breaking down in soil over a set period), so there is nothing to retrieve and no pollution — matching the tightening environmental sourcing rules in the EU and US.

Weed Suppression

Black weed barrier blocks the light weeds need to photosynthesize, stopping them from germinating — cutting manual weeding and herbicide use.

Breathable & Moist

Open fibre structure lets water and air pass while slowing evaporation — fewer watering cycles and less disease pressure.

Insulate & Frost

White or silver fabric reflects and traps heat, giving seedlings a few degrees of frost protection on cold nights.

Biodegradable

Biodegradable formulations are available that break down in soil after their service life — nothing to collect.

Application 1: Weed Barrier / Ground Cover

Weed barrier is laid between orchard rows, in gardens and on vegetable beds. It suppresses weeds mainly by blocking light, while retaining soil moisture and preventing compaction. The two core specs are GSM and UV stabilization: GSM is typically 60-120gsm and governs stiffness and lifespan; UV stabilizers determine how many seasons it survives in open sun — without UV, fabric can powder within one season. Huayue weed barrier uses an anti-UV formulation around 100gsm, black, permeable, and suited to apple, citrus, blueberry orchards and landscaping.

Application 2: Frost Protection Covers & Blankets

Late-spring cold snaps and frost are the enemy of seedlings and ornamentals. White frost covers fit over individual plants (often with a zipper or drawstring for easy access), while crop blankets are rolled over whole rows or beds. Both trap a layer of still air inside the fabric to hold heat, typically giving 2-6°C of frost protection while staying light- and air-permeable, so there is no need to uncover them during the day. Huayue makes everything from single-plant covers to large rolled blankets, in 30-80gsm, cut to the nursery’s actual dimensions.

Application 3: Biodegradable Nursery Bags

Traditional propagation uses plastic pots, and transplanting means lifting the root ball out — disturbing the roots. With nonwoven nursery bags you plant the whole bag with the seedling: the breathable fabric lets roots air-prune and grow through into the field soil, so transplant shock is minimal and survival rates climb. Biodegradable versions break down in the soil over months, so there is nothing to retrieve. That makes them popular for oil-tea, eucalyptus, fruit trees, ornamentals and vegetables.

Three Spec Questions: GSM, UV, Biodegradable?

Ask three questions before ordering. First, exposure: is it long-term open-sun (orchard ground cover) or short-season cover (winter frost)? Open sun demands UV-stabilized formulation. Second, lifespan: one season or several? Temporary cover can be light GSM; multi-year ground cover should be 90gsm+. Third, retrieval cost: where volumes are large and labour to collect is expensive, a biodegradable option saves the most hassle. Answer these and your supplier can quote the right spec.

Q1: What types of agricultural nonwoven are there, and what is each used for?

Four main types. Weed barrier goes between orchard rows and on garden beds to suppress weeds and hold moisture. Frost covers protect individual plants and pots from frost and wind. Crop blankets shield fields, seedbeds and block plantings through winter. Nursery bags are used for raising and transplanting tree, ornamental and vegetable seedlings. Choose by scenario first, then by GSM and whether UV stabilization is needed.

Q2: Which GSM should I choose?

Reference ranges: weed barrier 70-120gsm, with 90gsm or more for multi-year orchard use; frost covers 40-60gsm, where heavier insulates better but transmits slightly less light; crop blankets 30-60gsm; nursery bags normally 60-100gsm depending on diameter and height. Higher is not automatically better — the goal is the balance point between service life, light conditions and cost.

Q3: Nonwoven costs more than plastic film — is it worth it?

Per square metre, nonwoven does cost more than plastic film — until you factor in service life. Weed barrier lasts 3-5 years while film typically survives only one or two seasons, and film adds annual retrieval and disposal labour plus the risk of suffocated roots. For perennials and orchards, nonwoven usually works out cheaper overall. For a single-season vegetable crop, film still makes sense.

Q4: Is agricultural nonwoven biodegradable? Does it need to be retrieved?

Standard PP agricultural nonwoven is durable and reusable, so it does not need seasonal replacement, but it is not a fast-biodegrading material and should be recycled at end of life. If your market requires biodegradability, degradable substrates can be quoted — state the certification you need when you enquire and we will assess it and send samples.
