GRS Certificate: What It Covers and How to Verify It

Global Recycled Standard Certified Product Supplier

What is GRS? Why is it so important for international exports?

The Global Recycled Standard (GRS) is not just an audit of recycled material content, but also a comprehensive assessment of corporate social responsibility, environmental compliance, and chemical safety. As global emphasis on sustainability grows, major European and American retailers now explicitly require suppliers to provide GRS certificates. Obtaining this certification means Huayue's products are protected from numerous green trade barriers, helping customers quickly enter high-end international markets.

Full Chain Traceability

From initial waste collection and shredding/granulation to final fabric production, every roll of GRS material has a unique traceability ID to ensure the authenticity of the certificate.

Low Carbon Footprint

Compared to virgin materials, using recycled materials reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 30% and energy consumption by 50%, making it essential for achieving ESG goals.

Huayue has successfully developed RPET and RPP non-woven fabrics with recycled content ranging from 30% to 100%, with tensile strength performing at over 90% compared to virgin materials. Whether it's a cost-effective 30% recycled option or a premium 100% recycled product for high-end markets, we offer stable bulk supply with complete GRS documentation.

Scope Certificate vs Transaction Certificate: What Each One Proves

Buyers actually receive two different documents, and they do different jobs. The Scope Certificate (SC) is issued to the factory by an accredited certification body (such as Control Union, Intertek or SGS); it confirms that the factory is qualified to produce a given product category to GRS, and it is typically valid for one year. The Transaction Certificate (TC) is issued for one specific shipment, tying the recycled input to the recycled content of the finished goods. The SC proves capability — only the TC proves that a particular batch complies.

Verification takes three steps: (1) ask the factory for the SC certificate number and the issuing body; (2) look the number up on the website of the issuing body or in the Textile Exchange certified-company database; (3) check three things carefully — is the certificate still in date, does the certified product category cover what you are buying (non-woven fabric, for instance), and does the factory name on the certificate match the business licence and the customs paperwork. Ask for the TC after shipment and reconcile the order number, quantity, GSM and recycled percentage against what actually arrived.

Three mistakes we see often: treating the SC as proof that every batch complies (it only establishes capability); accepting a screenshot of a certificate without checking the number; and taking goods made with recycled material but with no TC. The last one is the riskiest — it is exactly what gets held up in EU and US customs spot checks or brand sustainability audits, and fixing the paperwork afterwards costs far more than the price gap you saved.

Q1: What is GRS certification?

The Global Recycled Standard audits not only recycled content but also corporate social responsibility, environmental compliance and chemical safety. Major EU and US retailers now explicitly require GRS certificates — it is a hard filter for entering green supply chains.

Q2: What recycled-content ratios does Huayue offer?

We produce RPET and RPP nonwoven at 30%-100% recycled content: the 30% option balances cost, while 100% recycled serves premium markets. Tensile performance is over 90% of virgin material.

Q3: What documents come with GRS shipments?

Every GRS shipment comes with the GRS certificate and a Transaction Certificate (TC), and each roll carries a unique traceability ID covering the whole chain from waste collection to finished fabric — so brand-side audits go smoothly.

Q4: Is recycled material much weaker than virgin?

The gap is small. Our RPET/RPP achieves over 90% of virgin tensile strength, and the spunbond process is identical to virgin production. For most packaging applications, the 30% recycled option performs practically the same as virgin material.

Verifying a GRS Certificate in Five Minutes

A certificate number is a claim until you check it. Ask for the Scope Certificate number and the issuing certification body, then look it up in the Textile Exchange database or the register of that body. Check four things: the company name matches the entity on your invoice, the site address matches where your rolls are actually made, the scope covers the process your supplier performs, such as spinning, nonwoven formation or trading, and the category covers nonwovens, and the certificate is still valid on your shipment date. Then match the Transaction Certificate for your shipment back to that scope certificate and check the recycled percentage on it against what you ordered.

It is not a quality certificate

GRS tracks recycled input and chain of custody. It says nothing about GSM tolerance, tensile or shade consistency, which come from the mill test report.

It is not a chemical safety certificate

Restricted substance testing sits under OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 or REACH and ROHS declarations. EU and US buyers often ask for both, and they are different documents.

It is not a social audit

Working conditions are covered by amfori BSCI, Sedex SMETA or WRAP. A brand audit pack usually asks for GRS plus one of these.

It does not travel with the roll

The certificate attaches to a transaction, not to a roll of fabric. Without the transaction certificate for your shipment, the recycled claim on that roll is unproven.

Keeping the Paperwork Audit-ready

Brand auditors and customs both work from documents. Keep for every shipment: a copy of the supplier scope certificate, the transaction certificate matching that shipment, the commercial invoice showing recycled content and the certificate number, and the packing list. Transaction certificates carry a validity window, so requesting one after the goods have landed often fails. If your buyer is a brand, ask at order stage whether they need the certificate issued in their name, because that decides who applies and when. Huayue supplies 30 to 100 percent recycled rPP and rPET with the full certificate set, and the recycled route adds 10 to 15 days to the standard 7 to 10 day lead time.
