How it compares to straw rope and plastic film

Choosing a tree wrap comes down to five things: breathability, moisture, how fast your crew can apply it, reuse, and disposal.

Where it is used

Trunk, root ball or whole tree — three jobs, three formats.

① Winter trunk wrapping

Spiral-wrap the trunk and main limbs of newly planted and young fruit trees to limit sunscald (bark splitting from winter day-night swings) and frost damage. Slit narrow so one person can work alone.

② Root ball wrapping (transplant)

Wrap the root ball in a wide cut after lifting so it does not fall apart in transit — breathable and water-permeable, so unlike plastic film it will not suffocate the roots. Slit or remove at planting: PP does not biodegrade and should be collected for recycling.

③ Whole-tree wrapping of low fruit trees

Use together with our plant frost blanket — wrap first, then cover. Blankets scale better across an orchard; tree wrap is easier to manage tree by tree.

④ Wind protection in transit

Cover or bundle nursery stock for transport to cut wind desiccation; remove and recycle on arrival.

How to wrap · 4 steps

Technique affects winter survival more than the material does.

  1. Clear the base — prune out diseased or pest-holding shoots and loose bark so you do not seal eggs and spores in.
  2. Spiral from the bottom up — start at the root collar and overlap each turn by about half the strip width, leaving no straight seam.
  3. Close it loose — fix the top with a tie, slack enough to slip a finger under. Tight wraps girdle the trunk as it thickens.
  4. Remove it in spring — once temperatures settle, take the wrap off. Left on, any material will hold moisture against the bark and harbour pests.

The usual mistake is wrapping and forgetting. Tree wrap is a seasonal measure, not permanent armour.

Choosing the GSM

Same PP spunbond, but GSM sets both warmth and service life. Guidance only — your local minimum temperature and species decide.

RangeTypical use
40 - 60 gsmMild winters, short frost windows, annual nursery stock
60 - 90 gsmStandard winter trunk wrap, temperate orchards
90 - 120 gsmCold regions, long wrapping periods, reuse-focused contract buying

Not sure? Send us the species, your local minimum temperature and how long you need it on — we will recommend a GSM and post free A4 swatches so you can feel the difference first.

FAQ

Anything else — just WhatsApp or email us.

We supply PP spunbond tree wrap across 40 - 120 gsm. Mild regions and short frost windows sit at the lighter end; cold regions and reuse-focused contracts sit at the heavier end. Tell us the species and your local minimum temperature and we will recommend a GSM.

Up to 3.2 m master roll, slit to width. Trunk wrapping normally uses narrow strips, root balls use wide cuts — tell us the job and the trunk diameter and we slit to suit, which cuts on-site trimming and waste.

Mostly labour and consistency. Straw rope is tied strand by strand and loosens as it dries; nonwoven spirals on from a roll, so two people can wrap a hundred trees a day, and unlike plastic film it will not scald the bark.

PP spunbond is breathable and water-permeable, so moisture escapes instead of pooling against the bark. Do remove it in spring — any wrapping left on indefinitely will hold moisture against the trunk.

Yes, for several winters depending on GSM, if you store it well: take it off at the end of the season, dry it, roll it and keep it somewhere cool and dark. It is a consumable, so we do not recommend indefinite reuse.

No. Polypropylene does not biodegrade — that is exactly why it outlasts burlap. Collect used material for recycling after planting. Talk to us if you need a degradable route instead.

Yes — GRS-certified rPP (recycled polypropylene) is available, with the recycled content set to your requirement and a transaction certificate issued per batch.

Half a tonne for standard stock; custom slit widths are assessed per project. Free A4 swatches for handfeel and colour, and custom sampling takes 5-7 days.

We ship to 30+ countries on FOB, CIF or DDP terms and can arrange sea freight, air freight and customs clearance.
