Frost Protection for Plants: How to Choose Plant Covers vs Crop Blankets

2026.09.09 HuaYue Fabric

Every spring and autumn, growers learn the hard way about frost: lush green one evening, wilted black shoots and buds the next morning. Agriculture has many answers to frost, but few are as cheap, clean and easy as frost-protection nonwoven — no spraying, no smudge pots; you unroll it, lay it over, and there is no need to uncover it during the day. This guide explains the difference between plant covers and crop blankets, and how to choose the right spec.

Plant Covers vs Crop Blankets: Two Formats

A plant cover is a three-dimensional "sleeve" fitted over an individual plant or shrub, often with a zipper or drawstring base for easy opening to check and water. A crop blanket is rolled fabric laid over an entire bed or crop — ideal for row-grown leafy greens, strawberries and flowers. Covers are flexible and protect single plants; blankets are efficient over large areas. Many operations use both: covers for young trees and bonsai, blankets for field greens.

Key Specs: GSM & Light Transmission

GSM sets both frost protection and price. Light (17-30gsm) suits light frost with excellent light and air transmission — fine for floating row covers. Medium (40-60gsm) is the mainstream, giving 3-5°C of protection while keeping decent light and durability. Heavy (70-80gsm+) is for hard frost, protecting more but transmitting less light. On light transmission, white nonwoven lets plants keep photosynthesizing — a key reason it outperforms opaque materials for live plant cover. Huayue frost covers and blankets range 30-80gsm, mainly white, and are cut to your nursery dimensions.

Picking GSM

Light frost 17-30gsm; normal frost 40-60gsm; hard frost 70-80gsm+. Colder needs heavier, at the cost of some light.

Degrees of Protection

A trapped still-air layer typically gives 2-6°C; adding a hoop tunnel or double layer boosts protection.

Three Ways to Cover & Field Tips

Floating cover: lay fabric directly over the crop and anchor the edges with soil or clips — ideal for low greens, but use light GSM so it does not flatten plants. Hoop tunnel: drape fabric over wire hoops to form a tunnel, giving more headroom and stronger frost protection with easy venting. Single-plant cover: for young trees and containers, use a cover with a drawstring or zipper and cinch the base so cold air cannot rise from underneath. Whatever the method, keep the fabric edge on the ground and weighted — gaps leak cold and cut the protection sharply.

Q1: Should I choose a plant cover or a crop blanket?

Match the format to the target. Individual young trees, containers and valuable specimens use covers with a zipper or drawstring — flexible and easy to open for inspection. Whole beds of leafy greens, strawberries or flowers use rolled blankets, which are far more efficient over large areas. Many operations use both.

Q2: How many degrees of frost protection does it provide?

The trapped still-air layer typically gives 2-6°C of protection in a single layer; adding a hoop tunnel or a double layer boosts it further. Heavier GSM protects more but transmits slightly less light — pick the tier by your local minimum temperature.

Q3: Which GSM suits my crop?

For light frost or floating row covers use 17-30gsm so low-growing crops are not flattened. The mainstream choice for normal frost is 40-60gsm, giving 3-5°C while keeping light transmission and durability. Hard-frost regions use 70-80gsm or heavier. Longer service life also calls for heavier fabric.

Q4: Do the covers need to be removed during the day?

No. White nonwoven transmits light well, so plants keep photosynthesizing during the day, and the breathable fabric prevents moisture build-up. That is exactly why it outperforms opaque plastic film for covering live plants — once laid, it can simply stay on.
